Honda CB125R
If you're a fan of naked bikes, then the ever popular Honda CB range has you covered. Honda like to call this the ‘Neo Sports Café’ range, whatever that means! We don't see the need for a fancy title, the solid build and comfortable riding position are great for learners, with peak power coming in around 10,000rpm and cruising speeds that will easily cope with dual-carriageway riding.
Aprilia RX 125
Perhaps a trail bike is more your thing? The upright, high riding position of a trail bike is perfect when you first get on two wheels. Aprilia offer bikes that are great value for money for a first-time rider too and unless you're lucky enough to have the bank of mum and dad paying, that's a key consideration for new riders.
Honda C125 Super Cub
Ok, this one is a bit left-field but it is a classic all the same. The very first C100 Cub was from around 1958, but some of us are old enough to remember the Cubs being a common sight in the 1970s. The Cub has been updated with some modern features such as a digital dash, but it doesn't really compare to more modern scooters (no underseat storage on the Cub!) but we couldn't resist a bit of nostalgia! If only Yamaha would remake the FS1E - ask your (grand)dad about his 'Fizzy' and watch him get all dewy eyed!
Yamaha R125
A 125 that looks like a bigger sports bike is always going to hold a lot of appeal for many new riders, but it doesn't come cheap. Despite the sporty style, this is still a great first bike and compared to rivals you get peak power earlier than many rivals at 9000 rpm.
